Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you...” Matthew 28:19-20
Discipleship is the heart and soul of Christian life, and of every healthy church. Jesus has called each one of us to follow him and learn to be just like him. He has invited us to cultivate the kind of integrity and character he has. To develop the intimacy with the Father that he enjoys. To bring peace, truth and healing the way that he did. And while we do all that, to teach others around us how to do the same.
So one thing we can look for in a healthy church or ministry is people whose lives are being transformed by Jesus. The gospel should make a difference in people’s lives—we want to see them deeply healed and transformed. That’s why the major task of church planters and leaders is discipleship.
But it isn’t only the job of church planters and leaders. We really believe that everyone gets to be in on this thing. Watching people be filled with the hope, healing, and joy of Jesus is exciting, and we want everyone to get to experience that. So at the same time we’re showing others how to follow Jesus, we’re also teaching them how to turn around and teach it themselves to their friends, family, and neighbors. We want to make disciples who make disciples who make disciples who make...well, you get the picture.
This kind of discipleship happens best in authentic, healthy relationships within the context of the local church. Our goal at Multiply Vineyard is to provide the very best support and resources we possibly can to equip and empower local churches for the task. Take a look at what we have to offer below.
- Blog: We regularly feature blogs, articles, and other tips and resources for discipleship on our blog. Browse through a few of them now, and subscribe to never miss a post.
- Discipleship Guides: We have partnered with Vineyard Resources and Bob Logan (a coaching guru and friend to the Vineyard) to develop a set of Discipleship guides called Vineyard Dimensions of Discipleship.
This set of 8 study guides is designed so that individuals or groups of all sizes can work through them together. They can even form the basis of a sermon series. The guides walk you through how to become more like Jesus in every facet of life, through Scripture, reflection, and calls to action. They are available through Vineyard Resources.
Coaching: We have found coaching to be such a valuable tool for increasing pastors and church planters’ effectiveness, that we are offering two years of coaching to all our new church planters for free. A coach can be a fantastic resource in helping you think through how to improve discipleship in your church. Find out how you can get coached here.
